A musician literally since the age of 3, Ainslie is a Phi Beta Kappa and honors graduate of Washington & Lee University (1974). Ainslie was a leader in the North Carolina Visiting Artist Program, serving on its state board from 1988-1990. He was awarded the 20th Annual Sam Ragan Fine Arts Award by St. Andrew’s Presbyterian College. Ainslie has received numerous other awards and grants for his artistic and scholarly contributions through Blues performance, documentation, scholarship, and education.

Ainslie began his work in theater with Robert Wilson’s and Phillip Glass’s Einstein On The Beach. In 1981, Ainslie was chosen for the original cast of Cotton Patch Gospel, playing the Lamb’s Club Theater. He subsequently served as musical director for Cotton Patch Gospel.

Ainslie has contributed recorded sound and music to a number of film projects, most recently a short fundraising video for the National Museum of African American History & Culture, to open on the Mall in Washington, DC in March, 2015.

Ainslie has five solo compact discs of traditional blues and original songs. He is the author of Robert Johnson/At The Crossroads (Hal Leonrard, 1992) – a book of transcriptions of the recordings of this Mississippi Blues legend with complete annotated lyrics, a brief Johnson biography and historical notes. He is also the video instructor for Robert Johnson’s Guitar Techniques (1997) on the Starlicks Master Sessions video lesson, now available as a DVD. Ainslie maintains an active schedule teaching, leading workshops, writing, recording, and performing.
